1 June 2019 – Tootsie – Marquis Theatre, New York
The musical comedy "Tootsie" moved to Broadway a few weeks ago. She also meets a great success, especially with critics. nominated in 11 Tony Award categories – Reference ceremony which rewards every year the New York creations – it ensures already a superb season 👏
Based on the film 1982, The show tells the story of Michael Dorsey, a talented actor, but arrogant, desperate to win the role of his life. After several failed auditions, he takes the guise of Dorothy Michaels and gets in a few weeks the toast of Broadway. But while the public falls for Dorothy, Michael meets the woman of his dreams, which is none other than his scene partner ... This is where the trouble begins 😁
The scenario is one of the highlights of the show. I do not know how the musical approaches of the film, but the story is really captivating. Everything goes a bit like in the movies : there are lots of twists, we have time to focus on the characters and is moved by the fate of this actor in search of recognition. There are many references to the world of Broadway, New York obviously, and above all full of little nods to pop culture (including one very discreet with Spice Girls ❤). The whole piece is very funny : either in the text or in situations. Some exchanges are complex to understand because the characters talk fast, but overall, no major problems at the level of language.
I found super nice soundtrack and integration of particularly good songs 👍. They come to support the story and not the reverse as is sometimes the case. The title that caught my attention, it is « There Was John », starring Lilli Cooper (Julie). I loved his voice! And I'm not alone, because the audience around us humming the theme during the interlude. The album is not yet available, but I will add the link once it is on streaming platforms!
Regarding the staging, you know it : this is one of the elements which I attach the greatest importance – especially at Broadway, you can quickly fall into the cheap. I must say that I particularly liked this! Without being incredibly innovative, it takes us in a dozen different designs : Michael's apartment, Manhattan streets, repeat tray, theater, it is super well done! Transitions are fluid, and one feels that the creative team has done a quality job.
Regarding costumes that are also an important part of the show : is colored, luminous, they have made efforts to offer perfectly appropriate clothing to a theme like this. And, we must not forget that the whole show is based on the transformation of Michael Dorothy, and they did a great job in wigs and makeup to make more feminine Santino Fontana, despite his physical stunt 😅.
Moreover, let's talk about it,Santino! The guy – who is a regular in Broadway – It's incredible. He interprets his character perfectly and technically, it is amazing : he sings with a head voice 75 % time, all with strength and clarity – I was impressed! I wondered how he could keep 2 h 30 alternating the two personalities 👍. What I also liked, is that everyone has his moment. Sarah Stiles (Sandy) portrays the role of a hysterical and proves in a delusional titled solo « What’s Gonna Happen », Reg Rogers (Ron) embodies as-is it a crazy director who has a very special sense of choreography, short, it's a whole cast of characters, somewhat caricatured, but still funny.
I also found that there was a good feeling between the players, we feel pleasure to play and it's super important to me! There is a lot of energy on stage : there really is something going on between the actors and the audience.
It is always difficult to sum up a musical in a few lines, but what I can tell you without hesitation, is that the bet is successful. The show tells the story of Toostie with intelligence and style, remembering to also address gender issues and issues of women's place in society today. These numerous observations have also earned the actors bursts throughout the evening applause : the message is passed 👌.
The staging is quality, the actors are great and really nice soundtrack. I left the room with a smile and if with that, I have not convinced you yet, I do not know what to do😅 I highly recommend the show if you've already seen all the great Broadway classics or you want to discover something else. For my part, I will continue my tour of New York theaters : there are a lot of new shows this year! I would like especially to see Moulin Rouge which starts at the end of June, but I'll wait for the lottery, because the price of tickets is indecent (for change).
