2 November 2019 – Tina: The Tina Turner Musical – Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, New York
After a thunderous launch 2018 in London, « Tina: The Tina Turner Musical "finally arrives on Broadway. As « The Cher Show » or « Summer: The Donna Summer Musical », it is a biographical jukebox musical counting up the singer tubes recounting the great stages of his career and his personal life. The occasion of (re)discover more than twenty songs, dont « River Deep, Mountain High », « The Best » or « Proud Mary ».
From its beginnings in Nutbush, near Memphis, its transformation into rock'n'roll legend : Tina Turner n & rsquo; not only breaking the rules, She has rewritten the. Produced by the singer herself, the show recounts his tumultuous relationship with Ike Turner, but also shattering his comeback after a long journey through the desert. Initially rejected by the record industry for what it is, his courage and tenacity eventually paid and will make her one of the biggest music stars ⭐.
The show traces the major stages of the career and personal life of Tina Turner nothing ignore. The first half of the show says his relationship with Ike Turner and the way he treated, with violence and brutality. Fortunately, the show also offers lighter sequences that allow us to rediscover the vast repertoire of the singer. I do not also know that it was she who sang « River Deep, Mountain High » 😱. The second part focuses on how she managed her comeback after her separation. It's a little less exciting than the first half, but there are owls numbers. Generally, reminded me « Summer : the Donna Summer musical » more consistently and means.
The show has 23 securities : I'm not familiar disco Tina Turner, but it made me want to immerse myself. It's a real pleasure to hear songs like « The Best » or « Proud Mary » played and sung live ❤. There is a lot of energy throughout the show and I am sure that the final sequence will make you want to get up to sing and dance, despite the fact that this is not the real Tina !
The staging is one of the highlights of the show 👍. Everything is in perpetual motion, which makes the whole fluid and always fun to watch. A video screen complements the decor to create specific atmospheres in each issue : a country house in Tennessee, a London recording studio or a television set. It is very varied ! I loved the psychedelic sequence where we see Ike in the background influence of drugs while Tina rages on « I Want To Take You Higher » right before our eyes. This is one of the most successful. The final also was fun, it's a bit the wow effect of the show. We say that it's almost a shame to have waited so long to show it all.
There are hundreds of costumes and wigs ! We were in the front row and we could appreciate the work done to revive these times and these different modes 👏.
We did not have Adrienne Warren, but Nkeki Obi-Melekwe who plays Tina in matinee. It n & rsquo; not Tina, but she offered us a fine performance. She has captured the essence of the character in its energy and postures while avoiding imitation - what I had criticized the actresses « The Cher Show ». Generally, all artists playing well. There are many people on stage, but everyone managed to have his moment anyway. The little girl Tina child performer is hilarious, and what voice 😊.
As I said a little higher, the show is rather fluid. Inevitably, there are timeouts. In particular in the second part. The dialogues and saddled walks a bit and despite the performance of comedians, you end up looking at his watch… But rest assured, the end of the show is full of surprises and largely offsets the few minutes of relaxation 🤩.
I had a great evening : the show is entertaining and holds the road better than the other two musicals jukebox I had the opportunity to see (« The Cher Show » and « Summer: The Donna Summer Musical ») ; which have already closed their doors. The staging is top : one feels that they have worked to make quality stuff, that is fluid and allows a lot. The actors are up to the challenge of the directory and the life of Tina Turner : there are voices, there is emotion, there are energy. If you like a little bit songs, you will be filled, because they are well promoted and were not butchered with new arrangements disgusting like that can sometimes be the case !
A must see ? I would not go so far ... but you will definitely have a good time ! Next year we will be pleased (or horror 💁♂️) discover musicals based on directories of Michael Jackson and Britney Spears whose productions seem to encounter significant delays. Waiting, I invite you to join me on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to discover the other shows I've been fortunate to attend!
