16 January 2019 – The Book of Mormon – Eugene O’Neill Theatre, New York
Considered one of Broadway's masterpieces, "The Book of Mormon" is on display for nearly 10 years. Who would have bet on the success of a musical that tells the story of two Mormon missionaries sent to Uganda to evangelize the locals? 🤷♂️ Yet this is the crazy bet what did the creators of the cult series "South Park", Trey Parker et Matt Stone.
Elected "musical of the century" by The New York Times, the show tells the story of two young Americans, Elder Price et Elder Cunningham, sent to Africa by their community to convert the local population. They discover the misery of a Ugandan village, ravaged by violence, corruption and disease, where it will be difficult to spread the word. Their mission takes a major turn when the young Nabulungi decides to help…
The text, This is the first strong point of the spectacle 👍. We have fun from beginning to end! The authors mark the point at all levels : there is no dead time in the course of history, the jokes are fly, the characters are endearing. It's vulgar, corrosive, indecent and everyone takes for his rank : « Imagine that your brain is made of tiny boxes, find the box that’s gay and CRUSH IT! » – I loved it 😂
And where they pound the nail : it is with music, for the soundtrack of the show is excellent. You will all head air out of the room! Can not choose the most outstanding song : the opening, « Hello », is extraordinary and sets the tone for the whole show ... But one can also quote "I Believe" and "Hasa Diga Eebowai" (I let you discover the meaning for yourself), as part of the show's key titles. A ride on Deezer or Spotify you will discover some of the gems of the show 🎧.
I always attaches great importance to the staging. I love when there is beautiful scenery and lots to see. Right here, the decor is not grandiose, but it works. They leave much to the imagination : the opening number, « Hello », is a perfect example ! Will soon discover live performance given by Tony Award 2012 : « Hello » 👈. of course we find the eccentric side of Broadway in certain sequences, comme « Turn It Off » ou « Spooky Mormon Hell Dream », where the main disciples of the devil are : Adolf Hitler, the serial killer and cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer and Starbucks (Mormons can not drink). What a program 😂
For costumes and accessories, sobriety is also required. Some outlandish characters are also appearing in the show as I said a little earlier. You will come across as Jesus, Dark Vador, Bono, and many others !
I recapitulate : was a bright text, memorable songs, successful decorating but also a golden cast! It was A-DO-RE actors ❤. The duo of brothers Mormons, Kevin Clay et Cody Jamison Strand, was perfect, until the voice intonations. Not to mention the secondary characters as Nabulungi or Elder McKinley played by a prodigious Stephen Ashfield. I was really excited about the troupe.
And then what meets the eye, is the pleasure that they have to be on stage : there seems to be a great atmosphere between them. It can capture throughout the show looks and grimaces among actors, That says everything.
I did not need to draw you a picture, I loved : it's one of the best musicals I've seen in New York since I am. There where « Frozen » or « Wicked » impress with their direction and their sense of drama, "The Book of Mormon" plays in a completely different field : that of humor (trash), and it is a total success 👌.
We laughed from beginning to end, it attaches to the characters, one leaves the room with songs in mind, what do you want more?! I advise you all to learn despite a minimum of Mormon before going to see the show if like me you do not know. That's what I did the day before, and I do not regret. Furthermore, language level demand still serious basis so if you are not sure you, please listen to the soundtrack before, or even read the script .... Me, that's what I'll do a few days to understand the subtleties that I have not picked up on site. I'm not a native American, so inevitably there are things that have escaped me !
I am delighted to start 2019 on a show like this, I really had a nice evening, and I look forward to seeing what reserve the rest of the year!
