29 June 2019 – Hugh Jackman : The Man. The Music. The Show – Madison Square Garden, New York
The first time I saw "The Greatest Showman 'cinema, I immediately imagined adapted into a musical with Hugh Jackman on Broadway. And, after listening to the soundtrack more than one million times, my dream was partly realized! Hugh Jackman has launched a few months ago a world tour in which he interprets the songs of the film in the middle of the great classics of Broadway and Hollywood! He offers to Madison Square Garden 3 concerts exceptionnels à New York. Are you ready to discover the man, the music and the show ? 😍
Habitually, I always try to arrive before the time indicated on the ticket. Except that way, le compte Twitter de la salle m’apprend que le début du show est prévu pour 19 h tapantes. Oops 💁♂️. The New York subway is not reputed to be the most effective in the world, vous imaginez bien qu’à 19 h, je suis bien sûr coincé entre deux stations bien loin du Madison Square Garden ! Nevertheless, mon ange gardien a pitié de moi : I arrived on time and the lights go out battery when I put my butt on the chair. It was less a 😅.
I barely have time to catch my breath as the introduction starts. The evening opens with a video montage of the most famous Hugh Jackman to film appearances. C & rsquo; is the title « The Greatest Show » which illustrates. The first thing I notice, is that the decor is very well done! Two large side screens framing the stage and there is a long step that goes off in the parterre. Le reste de la structure est assez moderne : the bottom is covered by a giant screen, divided into small cubes, and a central staircase separates the band into two parts. There are budget 👍.
Hugh Jackman appears at the top of the stairs. Il porte un pantalon noir assorti d’une veste argentée : it is class 😍. He comes down the stairs to join the dancers who accompany him on the tour. C’est une belle entrée en matière : he sings, he dances, it interacts with the public, and with video projections, we do not know where to turn! I have a little trouble to put me in, because I'm always two subway stops from my chair 😂. He goes on « Come Alive » the same kind of atmosphere. Vocally, this is not fair, but his energy than offsets the weaknesses of his voice. He also prove later that he is capable of better.
He took the floor to explain that he is delighted to be in New York, playing in this legendary venue that is the Madison Square Garden. I put a few seconds to adjust to his Australian accent, which is very different from the New York accent. He falls jacket and the show looks like a one-person show. Il explique qu’il est très à l’aise avec les nombres : on voit donc s’afficher sur l’écran des centaines de chiffres : how many trucks there on the road, how many musicians accompany, etc. Il ponctue son speech de plein de petits mots d’humour : the audience laughed uproariously every time he opens his mouth. Je ne peux pas tout vous raconter sinon le compte rendu ferait 20 pages 😆.
He explains that he started his career by saying yes to all projects proposed to her. And that's the reason why he was hired on the Australian tour of the musical " The beauty and the Beast " in 1995. He plays the role of « Gaston », he interprets the title song in stride. You can find the video at the end Article. The same year, he met his wife. Everything is very well done, as it interacts with the screens to tell the story of his encounter, supporting photographs! It's fast paced and interactive, you really feel invested in the story 👌.
He walks to the end of the advance him to autograph « All The Way ». He ended the song by telling us that she is in the room, and hurries to embrace under a thunderous applause. From what I understood, it is present every night, et va donc se taper le spectacle 90 fois entre mai et octobre. Good luck Deb '😅. He goes on a pretty fun title titled Johnny Cash « I’ve Been Everywhere » in which it listed a number of US cities. It keeps performance! And obviously, he plays! He jokes speaking of his teleprompter on stage, et dit qu’il est bien évidemment capable de faire sans… Ce qu’il nous prouve sans attendre !
It then interprets an excerpt from the musical "Dear Evan Hansel" I'm dying to go to Broadway, « You Will Be Found ». It is doing much better on these pieces where you have to give voice 👍. It is also accompanied a New York joined the choir on stage. He explained that the next song to matter much to him, because it reminds him of his father. L & rsquo; man little trip outside of Australia, but has nevertheless accompanied in New York 2002, to see interpret « Soliloquy » (Carrousel) au Carnegie Hall.
After the song, he tells us the creation of "The Greatest Showman" and its incredible success that allows him to do this tour. Il explique comment Keala settled – who plays the bearded lady in the film – was committed. She participated in workshops to prepare and put his voice on various securities « This Is Me ». Producers have been so captivated by his performance that they decided to take it for filming. and surprise, she's there !
It is therefore a Keala Settle all spruce, habillée d’une combinaison dorée brillant de 1000 feux, that is seen landing on stage « This Is Me ». I thought it was a surprise, but in fact, she is there every night as the wife of Hugh. It does not make least one of the most exciting moments of the entire evening. I loved the performance ❤. This is my best memory of the show – and it's ironic because I had not come for her. I invite you to discover the video at the end of the article : goodbye to the, j’en ai encore les poils !
I take this opportunity to apologize for the quality of photos and videos. I had a safety glass in front of me, and I have not really paid attention to what I was filming, giving this blurring of images. The performance of Hugh Jackman Keala allows to change. He returned for a medley dedicated to the musical "Les Miserables" (« Valjean’s Soliloquy / I Dreamed a Dream / One Day More »). I must admit that this kind of songs, this is frankly not my cup of tea! But I loved the staging of this table, très grandiloquente : he finds himself with all his company in the decoration of Notre Dame in Paris with a French flag floating wind. The vocal performance is also very impressive 👏.
It's the end of the first part! To intermission, a huge clock appears on the screen ; to show the American public the time that & rsquo; they still go for their sustenance in the hot dog stands, pop-corn, and other fried chicken 😂. I remain quietly in my place hoping that the second part is more exciting ... because I am still quite surprised to shape the show, it drags a little in length.
The show takes on a video editor Peter Allen, I unfortunately do not know 💁♂️. Wikipedia tells me that this is an Australian songwriter, died of AIDS in 1992, and who wrote many songs, some of which, Olivia Newton-John. Peter Allen, which is the central subject of the musical "The Boy From Oz", whose main role was played by Hugh Jackman, of course ....
Hugh so did his suit of lights input (his jacket seems made mirrors), taking a little less masculine postures than usual. I would argue that it is pussy 🌈. Stirring the pool, shaking ass, he interprets « Not The Boy Next Door » amidst the audience bursts of laughter. The atmosphere is lighter later. He took the opportunity to go tickle some viewers and invited on stage a lady in the front row, Maryline. and Maryline, she is hilarious too! Dressed in a flashy orange dress, it will make the show for about ten minutes with him on stage. He himself seems surprised by his boldness! He warns his singers that one of them will have to leave his place the next day 😂.
L’hommage à Peter Allen continu sur quelques-unes de ses plus célèbres compositions : « Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do) / Don’t Cry Out Loud / I Honestly Love You / Quiet Please, There’s A Lady On Stage / I Go To Rio ». This really is one of the times of the show I preferred : is light, resulting, festive : there are feathers and colors everywhere! It's the music hall in all its splendor, the number "100 % Broadway "I'm talking about every musical 😅.
He then explained that if a song by Peter Allen which particularly affects ... It's « Tenterfield Saddler » he interprets accompanied by a single guitar. Il fait place à ses choristes pour un autre titre de « The Greatest Showman » : « A Million Dreams ». To be honest with you, I am a little disappointed that leaves the pieces of the film to other artists, because for these songs that I came to see the show 😔.
S’en suivent alors deux longues séquences : the first is a tribute to the songs of Hollywood musicals with « Luck Be A Lady / Singin’ In The Rain / I Got Rhythm / Steppin’ Out With My Baby / Sing Sing Sing ». I admit that even if the picture is very well staged, I pick up a bit of the show at this point. The atmosphere is very 50's. For the second sequence, he tells us that he loves dancing since he was a child and he would like to take classes. At & rsquo; time, son frère s’était moqué de lui et il avait fait marche arrière 😔.
A bit later, he still taught the tap-dancing, and proves it with another medley, more dynamic, comprenant les titres suivants : « 42nd Street / Thunderstruck / September / Takin’ Care Of Business / Jump ». Mixing tap dance and percussion, he completed the painting of breath, two sticks in hands, he now stands as the claws of Wolverine. Seeing imitate the famous mutant, the public is thrilled!
He then returns to the origins of the aborigines in Australia, et explique qu’il a participé à une retraite dans la nature avec eux il y quelques temps et qu’il en est revenu transformé. He decided to invite the legends of this community to come and share their beautiful scene on cultural and musical heritage 🙏. It's a bit surprising at the time of the show, but after all, why not? Ce sont donc deux morceaux du mouvement Nomad Two Worlds qui nous sont proposés : « Art Song » and « Inhibition ». It is almost scary at times 😆. Hugh Jakckman joined to interpret a rearranged version « Over The Rainbow », you can find the video at the end of the article.
It does not happen often, mais je ne me souviens absolument pas du morceau suivant : " The Ballad of Mack the Knife (Mack The Knife) ». This is a very jazzy title during which he is accompanied by his musicians and his band which he introduced the members turn. Fortunately, je retrouve mes esprits avant ma chanson favorite de « The Greatest Showman » : « From Now On » which is a perfect end. I love the atmosphere! Everything is as I imagined, full of dancers, a lot of energy ... We also see Keala make his return on stage. This is a great time. He ends the show with a title of circumstance, « Once Before I Go » Peter Allen, which closes this beautiful (and long 😅) evening.
There is much to say of this show. First of all, I do not expect this course, and this construction that combines one-person show and music. I think the formula is good, but that is all a bit too long 🤔. I do not have liked everything… titles such as Les Miserables, I m & rsquo; to be spent. But it takes something for everyone ! Me I went to see him sing the songs of "The Greatest Showman ', and I know that this is not the case for everyone. Ça dû être très difficile de créer le bon équilibre !
But he did very well out 👏. Si j’ai trouvé à la voix un peu faiblarde par moment : son charisme et son énergie ont compensé à 200 % les petits couacs.
The staging was really nice. J’ai aimé le joli décor mais aussi les costumes : it was beautiful throughout the evening 😊. Il a sa place sur scène : c’est un vrai entertainer. It takes the audience with him, punctuating each song a story or anecdote. He sings, he dances, He has charisma, I do not see what we can ask for more. I would keep in mind the excellent performance of Keala Settle on « This Is Me » and fantastic opening of the second part! With a few tweaks and a few cuts, I think it might be perfect!
