21 November 2019 – Dear Evan Hansen – Music Box Theatre, New York
Winner of six Tony Awards (including the Best Musical) and Grammy, « Dear Evan Hansen » est le musical star de Broadway ⭐. Since its launch in 2016, it is very complicated to obtain tickets at a decent price. For those who do not want to $199 in a ticket, it remains the lottery ... and perseverance, we won ! So it is time to discover the music that defines the US press as one of most remarkable show in theater history.
The story is about Evan Hansel, a lonely teenager and ill at ease. Constantly withdrawal, he finds himself at the center of & rsquo; careful when one of his classmates suicide. To comfort the bereaved family, Evan then invents an imaginary friendship with the young man and finds himself a prisoner of his lie. His life is changed forever…
The show tackles difficult subjects such as suicide or exclusion. If emotion is central in the story, we must also rely on humor that brings a light touch to all. The awkwardness Evan has no limit and the characters surrounding it clearly does not facilitate his life ! Trapped by his lie, it only postpones the inevitable, thus causing a series of incredible situations, which ultimately lead him to reveal the truth to his surroundings.
The soundtrack was written and composed by the duo Hollywood star, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, à qui l’on doit les chansons de « La La Land » et « The Greatest Showman ». The melodies are effective and fit perfectly into the story. There are a dozen titles to differentiate themselves : « Waving Through a Window » or « You Will Be Found », you will end up necessarily by humming 🎤.
The decor consists of & rsquo; moving screens on which are projected social networking catches. On the scene, there are some accessories that allow the viewer to imagine the place in which we find ourselves : a bed, a table, a sofa, etc. It's minimalist, but it works 👍 It even forgets video panels to focus exclusively on the performance of comedians.
But before speaking, a quick word about the costumes and makeup. The story takes place in our time and the characters wear everyday outfits, that could be part of our wardrobe. Everything is done to help identify and strengthen the emotion.
There is only 8 comedians on stage and they are brilliant ! This is one of the many highlights of the show. Andrew Barth Feldman, who plays Evan Hansel, only 17 years ! Yes, you read correctly : 17 years 😱 His way of speaking, his body language, mais aussi l’émotion qu’il provoque : one can only be impressed by his performance. It takes a lot for me to be moved to the movies or to a musical, and I must confess to you that I had throat tightened numerous times throughout the show. The cast is really very successful 👍.
The musical lasts 2h30 including intermission and all that unfolds like a movie : no dead time and I think it's also one of the major qualities of the show. Everything follows with a disconcerting fluidity ! The story, songs, exchanges between characters, advance the story without trying to pity the viewer on a particular situation and it gives one side a modern and dynamic at the entire show.
Je suis ravi d’avoir enfin pu découvrir ce spectacle dont j’entends parler depuis mon arrivée à New York ! Modern, moving, but devilishly effective, the show shows us what could be the next generation of musicals on Broadway. All elements fit together perfectly into each other : the scenario, songs, the comedians, to create an emotional melting pot, ranging from laughter to tears 😊.
And good news for you European friends, "Dear Evan Hansel" just landed in London 🇬🇧 I can only advise you to go see the show. so beware, on ne va pas voir « Dear Evan Hansel » pour les mêmes raisons qu’on va voir « Aladdin » or " The Lion King ". The show pushes the slider a little further in the narrative and emotion by offering something that is closer to the theater. The film adaptation is also planned : I think we have not heard the last of this dear Evan Hansel 😁.
