22 November 2014 – Calogero – Bercy, Paris
I'm writing about 160 Chronic concert, I am still unable to find the right catchphrase to begin. Calogero, I know quite a few. I appreciate his songs, I sometimes listen to his albums ; but I never pushed further curiosity. At the announcement of the tour, I thought it was the right opportunity to discover on stage, especially as I had only had positive feedback so far.
I get to Bercy to 19:30 Area, hoping to have missed at least one of the first two parts provided : Karen Brunon et Corson. Missed. Fortunately, their sets are short and the interval is short-lived. Before getting into the thick of it, I thank the Bercy security service prevented latecomers to integrate the pit from the sides before the concert and referred them to the back of the room. This is an excellent initiative, who humiliated quite CERTES, but that allowed everyone to keep his place. This bracket is closed, it is time that the lights go out and the show begins ...
The excitation is palpable. Projectors return a red light in the room. For the time being, we see that a circular screen at the front of the stage. It turns on and takes the form of a disc which rotates vinyl. As soon as the first notes of " Loyal " resound, it turns into cabinet and panel lifts slowly to reveal the scenery. The main big screen, which is in backdrop, lights and in turn projects a strong white light which reveals Calogero and his group in silhouette. The circular frame just get behind Calogero and continues to change until the end of the song. Musicians are placed on a high structure formed by a combination of pregnant, de baffle, etc. Long ago I had not seen on the scene also worked, especially for a French artist. After a quick " Good evening everyone ! », introducing "Apple C" sounds and causes a wave of euphoria in the room. Calogero down the structure and staging then reveals all its potential : we discover a series of six mobile screens in addition to the circular panel and the main screen. For this piece, they take the form of graphical editing tools (palettes, layers, etc.) interacting with black and white portraits projected in the background. It's very inventive and it fits perfectly with the song universe. I am pleasantly surprised by the scenography, because it is much more sophisticated than what I expected. Musically, it's just as hard. The live arrangements provide a true relief to the songs of Calogero : Energy is really the beginning for rock concert. Some untruths to stress, but nothing embarrassing well. He followed with "The Bourgeoisie Of Sensations", a truly powerful title battle. The mobile panels are placed above his head and broadcast images of a dark and threatening sky. For " Take root ", Bercy dons red. Calogero's face appears on the screen and the song ends, he and his musicians go into a fiery jam.
It speaks for the first time that evening : "But which way to seeing you here in Bercy ! ». He then explains that they went to record the disc in England 3 reasons : for show, for her and for driving left ... ; perfect transition (and a little farfetched as) for "Driving in England". This is clearly not a song that I like, but the staging is nice : each screen becomes Union Jack. The room intones "Decline ! drop ! drop ! ». It continues with the ride " Before you ". The circular panel is placed on top of it and brought forth an intense blue light. The picture is very pretty. It will then s & rsquo; install the piano, the top of the structure, for " The portrait " his latest single dated. I imagined a little less refined arrangements for this live version. I really expected a harder time. He sits in front of his instrument "The End Of The End Of The World". The intro is truly sublime live and title works really well. The screens appear mottled ink stains. The atmosphere is really top. It continues with two songs from his new album : "I The Right Also" and "The Eclipse" which is one of the songs I like. After that, it goes up to settle the piano to regain a title he has composed for Florent Pagny : " The soldier ". The screens turn into war medals that burn at the end of the song. The effect is impressive. It makes with " To dance again " that looks like two drops of water to the previous. Funny story, when he starts interpreting the song by : "A wrinkle in the mirror, I'm getting old. In bed I have room for two ", One of the spectators starts screaming ... taken with laughter, he must stop a few seconds to catch his serious : "Tonight I have room for Bercy, all come in my bed ! ». He then thanked the technicians sound and light show, and retrieves his guitar " It is said ". The song walking hyper live : the audience is really responsive. S’en suit "Passage Des Cyclones" and "The Modern World", Perhaps the two titles I found the least interesting of all evening. For " I miss her already ", mobile screens form a chain on which we see Calogero and a woman dancing. The atmosphere is excellent and the public in their heart's content on the musical bridge. the last part of the show is to attack "As free Than This". During the song, he brought one of his musicians to play a tablecloth violin he asks us to follow with the voice : music starts over again and the effect is really striking. One of the highlights of the show.
After that, the rear structure unfolds to form a kind of huge metal screen in front of which Calo and his group settle for " In front of the sea ". He lets the audience sing the chorus. The atmosphere is really good on this title. Another huge hit : "Weightless". The scene takes elevator paces with numbers scrolling on mobile screens. I filmed this sequence, you can find the video at the end of the chronicle. He chooses "A Day of Bad Location" to close the main set. The screens show the lyrics of the song in karaoke mode, we can resume with Calogero. I'm not a big fan of the song to the base, but I have to recognize that the record is really good live. To recall, he offers a refined version " If only I could miss him " before continuing with all musicians : «Yalla», one of the highlights of the concert and "The Fireworks" to end the evening.
Firstly a big congratulations to this concert Calogero. I do not expect to see such a sophisticated show : I was really impressed by all. The set design is inventive, dynamic and modern. It offers a real show and staged throughout the evening in the sometimes explosive sequences, sometimes moving : This is a magnificent concert. I loved the first and last pictures, " Loyal ", "Apple C", or "Weightless" ; the middle of the show is a little more sober, and gives pride to light scenes just one bombastic staging. I do not have to complain about the choice of songs. I think he was able to dip into his repertoire out of the outstanding securities, energetic songs, poignant title : the rhythm is fully controlled.
As for his performance, what can I say ? I felt a single artist, who does not let eat by machinery. I felt an inspired artist, who uses his talent throughout the concert, whether vocals, guitar or piano. And I felt a sincere artist, which takes the fun on stage, and that transmits the audience in front of him. I'll keep an excellent memory of this evening and I am leaving for a tour next 😀 We end this column with photos and videos of the concert.
