28 January 2020 – Ain’t Too Proud – Imperial Theatre, New York
Dans le sillage de « Jersey Boys » et « Summer », Broadway gets a new jukebox musical built around the Temptations directory ⭐. « Ain’t Too Proud » retrace le parcours du groupe américain de ses débuts à Detroit jusqu’à la fin des années 80, fingering titles rhythm and blues for more than two hours.
The musical focuses on the period known Classic Five, where the main leader of the quintet is the charismatic David Ruffin. Moving quickly on the first group's success, the story covers a lot of subjects actually quite ordinary in the life of an artist. It includes conflicts of ego, the failed relationships, the devastating effects of the glory, with of course the obligatory alcohol and drugs. So, Is it worth going to see "Is not Too Proud"? Answer in the following lines ... 😁
The story is told by the Temptations Otis, one of the historical group members. And it is through his eyes that we discover the main stages of their careers. Si le scénario est plutôt conventionnel et ne réserve que peu de surprises : I am not annoyed and found the course of the show pleasant enough. Topics echo many other shows similar (as « Summer » or « Tina ») without making it much, but there are still some nice emotional moments here and there.
The musical part is a real success 👍. I also was surprised to see how our neighbors knew the repertoire of Motown by heart. The troupe performs a thirty titles, dont les plus populaires : « My Girl », « Get Ready » or « Papa Was a Rolling Stone ». But my heart stroke, it is « I’m Gonna Make You Love Me », the song of the NBC Special with the Supreme ❤. The girls also pales next to the male cast, but we will come again. The musicians (the number of ... 18!) are concealed behind the scenes for most of the show, on ne les découvre qu’à la fin : I thought the music was on tape all night ... 😅
The staging was a bit surprised and disappointed ... ... in the sense that the show deserved to be bright and colorful just like the era in which the group operates. It's too simple, or even too dark 👎. The decor consists of mobile video panels, projections that show in black and white (for example, the cities of the tour or press clippings). Fortunately, il y a beaucoup d’accessoires qui font que la scène est en mouvement constant ! It is in turn in the office of Motown, then the scenes of a theater or on a TV set. On the other hand, it's not cheap at all (Hello « The Cher Show » 😆), and that, it's a real good point!
The group, which also features her outfits and choreography, demonstrated great elegance throughout the show! Between the pants legs eph 'and shovel passes pie to rival John Travolta, we feel a special care has been taken to costumes. This is a big yes!
But where the show really makes the difference and score points, it is with its cast 4 stars! 5 comedians share the bill (Derrick Baskin, Jawan M. Jackson, Jelani Remy, James Harkness et Elijah Ahmad Lewis) et tout ce qu’on peut dire c’est qu’ils transcendent littéralement le spectacle 🤩. energy, the voice, the interpretation : everything is there! If you want to see real vocal performances, and d & rsquo; impressive choreography, run applaud the artists of "Is not Too Proud". Because just for that, le prix du billet en vaut la peine : they are perfect!
Their synergy is remarkable. Le spectacle dure un peu plus de 2 heures et on est presque fatigué pour eux à la fin de la représentation. One thing I want to draw your attention anyway, c’est le niveau de langue requis pour apprécier le show : I think that the African-American accent can sometimes be difficult to follow for tourists. I advise you to go if you feel you are weary English, unless you really fichiez history ...
The show is undeniably a quality show 👍. If the scenario will leave you undoubtedly marble, the talent and energy of the actors will be enough to make you have a good time. Driven by a soundtrack that makes (more ... than) the job, the company connects the vocal performances, choreographies, And this, pendant près de 2 hours. I recommend it show if you are looking for a musical with real performance and you do not want to shell out a fortune in tickets.
There will be many musical jukebox on Broadway this year, including that of Michael Jackson and later that of Britney Spears, Obviously we'll talk.
